The Story Of Berets.com Origins?
In the summer of 1969, between my junior and senior year at Michigan State University, I traveled with backpack in tow, throughout Europe. In early July, at dawn, I arrived by train in Paris and made my way to a coffee house near the station. There I met a couple of jovial fellows who would change the course of my life for the next few weeks (and beyond). Brod and Jay, from New Orleans, were off
to Pamplona to run with the bulls. "Sure, I'll do that" and off we went in their Volkswagen Beetle, me cramped in the tiny back seat, happy to have found good guys and cheap transportation.
One very important destination lay between the famous Spanish fiesta and us. Brod had long-lost peasant relatives in the French Pyrenees and we were going to find them. Find them we did. Here is Henri Bepois and his family in 1969 at their dinner table in a tiny village in France. Note Henri's beret. That's me sitting next to him. Is this the inchoate origins of Berets.com? Qui Sais? Or perhaps this was phase one of a double whammy beret week? For here's yours truly a few days later in the Pamplona town center the evening before my foolish romp through the streets with crazy horned bovines. Note the red berets, part of the traditional costume of the locals. (I'm wearing an ivy cap. We sell those too.)
Although the Internet was science fiction in 1969, did a kind of Jungian imprinting occur back then that through kismet and a circuitous path lead us to this, Berets.com?
